The first annual Timothy J. Atkinson Memorial Scholarship has been awarded to Eleanor Mockler, a 2009 graduate of Francis Scott Key High School. The $1,000 scholarship is meant to help one Carroll County student as they pursue a career in a field that will assist or advocate for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Ms. Mockler was the secretary of Francis Scott Key's Best Buddies chapter and supported Special Olympics. For her senior capstone project she organized a Hawaiian dance party for students in the Learning for Independence (LFI) program. In her application she talked about children with disabilities and stated "I want to one day be able to look one of those children in the eye and tell them they are free from the disability everyone assumes is holding them back." She plans to attend Boston University in the fall with a major of pre-medicine.
The scholarship was created in honor of Timothy J. Atkinson, former Executive Director of The Arc of Carroll County, who passed away in November 2008.
